Over the years I’ve seen too many times how travel becomes something to be ticked off a bucket list and becomes driven by sites and sights. Slow travel is in danger of becoming part of this, as it becomes more marketing slogan than deep engagements with communities and their landscapes.
It’s time to (re) imagine travel as a deeper engagement with landscapes, their communities and ourselves. I’m a believer that a good way of doing this is within the broad slow travel approach, but with specific ideas related to forms of travel, travellers themselves and the landscapes, waterscapes and neighbourhoods through which we travel – the intersection of landscape sustainability and travel (LST). This is a very localised form of travel where landscape sustainability meets with forms of travel and travellers who are keen to have their travels make a contribution to local communities and their landscapes.
